Enspire Learning and Orbis Education Release Nursing Simulation

Austin, TX ? January 1, 2007 ? Enspire Learning and Orbis Education have proudly announced the release of the Orbis Clinical Management Simulation, an interactive online tool for nursing students. Enspire, a leading developer of e-learning and simulations, created the single-player application in Macromedia Flash.

"Healthcare facilities across the nation are experiencing severe nursing shortages. That was one of the issues we were trying to address in the Clinical Management Simulation," said Julia Preston, Enspire?s producer for the Orbis project. "Nurses are inundated with large amounts of clinical knowledge throughout their education, but they do not always receive proper management and leadership training."

The one-hour simulation randomly assigns the learner with 20 different patients, each with their own symptoms and needs. The course begins, "You're about to begin a 12-hour shift, and all beds are full. You've got a lot of work to do." The first part of the simulation focuses on clinical skills, such as determining a patient's acuity and criticality, while the second portion tests the learner's ability to effectively allocate resources. To be successful in the course, the learner must have medical knowledge and understand the dynamics of delegation and supervision.

Enspire succeeded in developing a realistic and immersive learning experience. Enspire has a production team of content developers and multimedia artists that is explicitly dedicated to medical e-learning projects, and this team offered Orbis years of expertise in tackling the subject matter both visually and verbally.

The audience for the Orbis Clinical Management Simulation is nursing students in accelerated, "second-degree" nursing programs. Although predominately female, they remain a diverse group in background and experience with ages ranging from 22 to 65. As students in the healthcare field, the learners' schedules are demanding and irregular. Therefore, the simulation is web-based, and the learners can take it on their own time. The simulation uses authentic nursing language and technical terminology, and it gives continuous, constructive feedback.

"The simulation allows nursing students to gain proficiency in combining their comprehension of clinical and management skills in a hospital floor environment before they have to apply those skills live," Preston continued.

The simulation was delivered to Orbis in the fall of 2006 and will be used in nursing classes beginning in the spring semester.
