Enspire Learning Awarded Grant from Texas Workforce Commission
Enspire and other Texas organizations assigned to "Meeting Industries Critical Workforce Needs: Biotechnology and Life Science"
Austin, Texas - September 25, 2006 - Enspire Learning, a leader in custom online learning and educational simulations, has been named a partner in a two-year, $750,000 Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) grant. The grant will fund an online education initiative to raise awareness of and promote biotechnology jobs in Texas.
The TWC is a state government agency that offers recruiting and outplacement services, career development information, training development, and job search resources to employers and job seekers across Texas. TWC, working with the Governor of Texas Office and other state agencies, has defined six key industry "clusters" that offer the most promise of attracting and retaining quality jobs for Texans. These clusters are: Advanced Technologies and Manufacturing, Aerospace and Defense, Information and Computer Technology, Energy, Petroleum Refining and Chemical Products, and Biotechnology and Life Sciences. This TWC grant is directed at the Biotechnology and Life Sciences cluster, a diverse and growing industry that ranges from pharmaceuticals to toxic waste remediation.
Enspire will partner with the Texas Business and Education Coalition and the University of Texas at Austin's Digital Media Collaboratory at the IC2 Institute to complete the biotechnology project. The project will include virtual tools for students and adults to help identify paths into biotech jobs, bridging the gap between what employers need and what Texas education institutes are providing. Ultimately, the project will be an accessible online resource for Texas employers and job applicants alike.
Enspire's design team will provide an overall "look and feel" for the project by creating a graphical user interface (GUI) that will frame the entire program. Enspire's team, which specializes in interactive online learning, will also contribute DNA sequencing simulations to the biotechnology project and other interactive media components. The Digital Media Collaboratory will build the technology back-end of the solution and the Texas Business and Education Coalition will be responsible for employer/educator partnerships as well as project implementation and dissemination.
Mindy Jackson, Enspire's Director of Instructional Design, who previously worked at the Digital Media Collaboratory said, "This is a partnership that brings together non-profit service, university research, and corporate know-how (as represented by the Texas Business and Education Coalition, the Digital Media Collaboratory and Enspire Learning) in a combination of resources and expertise to create an effective project. Cross-sector public and private partnerships are needed to bring together the multiple perspectives and capabilities necessary to address the complex social and economic issues such as workforce pipelines."
The project is slated for release in 2008.
