Game-Based Learning &
Serious Games

Enspire Learning has the experience, skills, and love of game development to provide your organization with a quality learning game unique to your needs. Games are of particular interest to Enspire because they provide a medium with a uniquely high level of interactivity and engagement.

Of course, developing games that are both fun and instructionally effective is very difficult. Simply stuffing content into a Jeopardy! format won't do. Successful learning games challenge players to think about the subject matter in new ways. This requires having a deep understanding of:

  • - A vast variety of game mechanics and how they support unique learning content and appeal to different audiences
  • - How to craft interesting choices for players, room to develop their own strategies, a balance in difficulty, and sufficient feedback to guide players to the correct solution
  • - Both instructional and game design, as well as multimedia and technology required to build a quality game on time and on budget

Our rigorous instructional design process and our knowledge of effective game-based learning let us create compelling experiences that meet the high expectations of the next generation of learners.

We have designed award-winning learning games for organizations like Sun Microsystems and CIGNA, and our games cover topics ranging from data security to disaster-relief strategies. For examples of our work in custom learning games, please visit our case studies and demonstrations.

Game or Simulation?

Game-based learning has much in common with simulations. One primary difference is that a game doesn't necessarily model a real-world application of the content. For instance, a game-based learning activity could use a virtual game-show format that promotes retention of factual knowledge, but doesn't reflect the real-world context of that knowledge.
